The results are in and yes, Millennials learn differently! Those aged 18-32 most likely make up a large proportion of your student base, and if you aren’t tailoring your training content to them then you could be missing out on training some of tomorrow’s best leaders, managers and business owners. So what are young adults looking for in their training content?

Efficiency and ease of use

Younger students aren’t lazy – in fact, they’re extremely good at finding out what they need to know exactly when they need to know it through Google or YouTube. They are also short on time due to balancing every aspect of their lives. That means that any educational content designed for this group needs to be straight to the point and free of waffle. Give them short videos, snippets of relevant information and short answer assessments so they can learn and prove what they know without wasting unnecessary time.

The logic behind the learning

Generally speaking, those aged 18-32 aren’t fans of out-dated authoritative teaching – or rote learning. If you can rationalise why they need to learn a skill or theory then they’ll be much more likely to absorb and retain it. This involves tying concepts to real world situations where they will be applicable, and that’s exactly why we use case studies as a crucial element within our assessment structure. Making sense makes learning a whole lot easier.

The freedom to self-educate

Generation Y students are an independent bunch and actually more motivated to begin their own businesses than previous generations. Online education offers the perfect environment for them to learn at their own pace and supplement their own education with individual research. Training content should be all about providing the essential course structure and resources for them to base their own understanding on.

Feedback and relationships

Millennials are searching for meaning in their work, study and relationships. That’s why it’s important for them to have authentic connection to their trainers in an educational context, as well as a clear idea of how they’re progressing through a course. Discussions, grades and feedback are all important to this age group, so encourage your trainers to make the most of the engagement features within your training content platform.
